The office will not be open to the public, but it will serve as a workspace for the RPS Downtown Safety Team, according to a press release issued on Tuesday morning. It did not provide a specific date for when the office would be completed.

The Downtown Safety Team is made up of police officers and alternative response officers (AROs) that provide “public safety programming” in cases where an armed officer isn’t needed.

The safety team was launched in the downtown and Cathedral areas on July 10, 2024. It is part of an RPS strategy titled “All In Progressive Policing Initiative: Engagement and Enforcement” to address safety concerns for residents, shoppers and businesses. The police initiative expanded to North Central and downtown neighbourhoods later that summer.

The office will be located on the main level of the shopping centre, near the Saskatchewan Drive East entrance, the release said.

“Cornwall Centre is happy to make this space available to the Regina Police Service in support of the new Downtown Safety Team,” Kendra Wren, general manager of Cornwall Centre, said in the release. “We are dedicated to building a stronger, more vibrant downtown for everyone, and this new office is intended to serve the greater good of the community.”
