Number of deaths in Scottish prisons hits record high

The number of people dying in prison in Scotland is at a record high – according to new research shared exclusively with Channel 4 News.

There were 64 deaths last year – a steep rise of 60% on the previous year. This includes a record number of suicides.

Scotland’s death rate is higher than that of England and Wales and among the highest in Europe.
