A highly anticipated expansion for the wildly popular Harry Potter-themed video game, Hogwarts Legacy, has been scrapped. The game, which has reportedly sold over 34 million copies, was set to receive additional content later this year.

Warner Bros. Discovery Inc., the publishers, had not made an official announcement about the expansion, but its development was reported last year, hinting at new storylines and a Definitive Edition of the game that would bundle all existing content.

However, Bloomberg has now reported that the expansion will not see the light of day. The business news outlet cited that the volume of content planned for the expansion “was not substantial enough to justify the price being considered”.

Despite this setback, a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy, one of the top-selling games in history, is reportedly still underway, reports the Mirror.

2024 proved to be a challenging year for Warner Bros. ‘ gaming division. A Suicide Squad title featuring iconic DC Comics characters failed to impress both critics and consumers, leading to layoffs within the studio responsible for its creation.

Additionally, a Wonder Woman game was axed, and three studios were shut down. Moving forward, the company has indicated a strategic pivot towards bolstering its major franchises, including Harry Potter, DC, Game of Thrones, and Mortal Kombat, as reported by Eurogamer.

Set a century prior to the Harry Potter series, Hogwarts Legacy allowed players to step into the role of a student at the renowned magic school. The game was generally well-received, with fans lauding its faithful recreation of J.K. Rowling’s magical universe.

However, it wasn’t without its detractors, who took issue with certain gameplay elements and technical aspects. Controversial views expressed by Harry Potter author JK Rowling also sparked calls for a boycott of the game.
